Performance

2009

The public is invited to take a seat on the bus. They are led into a state of light hypnosis. The sound environment facilitates the state of hypnosis : the muffled sounds place the passengers in a state of optimal attention. The performance takes place in a tour bus in order to explore the blurred zone between tourism and hypnosis, and to highlight the states of consciousness modified by the tour.

Coach ready for hypnosis
Coach ready for hypnosis

Comfortable bubble moving stealthily from place to place, the bus is the acme of the tourist device. The car hypnotizes its driver in the permanence of the perspective gaze. The bus is a machine for looking, like a camera obscura that glides endlessly along the roads of the globe. But it is a machine for looking sideways : the windows of the coach, although panoramic, divert any direct confrontation. It exacerbates the oblique glance, creates a lateral and furtive presence, which confirms the status of the tourist : here, but always at a distance, stopping only at selected points in the territory. The bus makes it possible to move one's strangeness as close as possible to the objects observed, without leaving one's comfort zone. To move one's comfort zone to other peoples' places.
